RH37. Bronze Vishnu statue. This Khmer-style figure shares the likeness of the famous Vishnu
statue at Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The Hindu god appears with four arms that signify the four points
of the compass and his command over the realms they encompass. Vishnu is concerned with
balance of opposing forces. In his hands this statue carries the four sacred objects of Vishnu: the
conch shell, which symbolizes water and the first sound of creation; the lotus, which represents the
unfolding universe; a wheel, which refers to the rotation of the earth, and seasons; and a weapon to
protect him from demons.
Very heavy bronze with a vibrant green patina. Wood base.
24" tall.
